Urgent Update to the 2013-2014 Winter Programme
On Friday 24th January, as an addition to our published programme the committee are pleased to announce an extra talk and presentation entitled “A Moment in Time” – Wicklow Lodge Military Hospital 1914 – 1919.
“A Moment in Time” is a story that begins with the “Call To Arms” in 1914, then through the Planning for the Sick and Wounded returning to Leicestershire and the Formation of “Wicklow Lodge” as a Military Hospital on 2nd January 1915. As the story unfolds we will look at “Caring for the Sick and Wounded”, at a nurse by the name “Cecelia Webb” and of course the “Patients”. Finally we hear about the hospitals closure on 19th April 1919. All of this will be accompanied by pictures from that period.
The talk will be presented by Derek Simmonds who, as a well-known Meltonian, has latterly turned his hand to writing and as the centenary of the First World War approaches it is perhaps fitting that this book looks at the previously unrecorded and forgotten history about the generosity of the people of Melton Mowbray and District, with all profits from the sales going to the “Help for Heroes” charity. (Copies are available from the Melton Bookshop – price £6.00).
