The Howard story is one of ambition, public service, liberal politics and artistic endeavours. Today, above all it is about the challenge of preserving the family home as a national treasure for family and visitors alike to enjoy. Discover: The Antique Passage; The Great Hall; Brideshead and The Chapel, together with the Gardens and Parkland. Whilst you wander in the gardens, you can walk to the Temple of the Four Winds and take in the beauty of the Howardian Hills with 360 degree views from the 18 century Pavilion originally used as a space away from the main house for reading and refreshment. There are also extensive woodland walks; temples, lakes and fountains. The grounds area a haven for birds, butterflies and dragonflies whilst the Great Lake is said to be home to fresh water mussels. Admire the ornate gateways which give glimpses into the walled garden, as well as the magnificent Victoria Gate connecting the walled garden to the stable courtyard; this entrance commemorates the visit of Queen Victoria. There are several places to eat or picnic, if you prefer, plus shops to tempt you and a garden centre.
