Wimpole Hall & Estate can be found in Arrington, Royston, Cambridgeshire, SG8 0BW. It is a working estate still guided by the seasons, with an impressive Mansion and Home Farm.
The Mansion, at the heart of this estate, is evidence of Elsie Bambridge’s success in creating a home. Intimate rooms contrast with beautiful and unexpected Georgian interiors, including Soane’s breath-taking Yellow Drawing Room and wonderful plunge bath. From furniture to porcelain, pictures to prints, you can take a peek at both fabulous and frivolous items which together with other more mundane pieces grace the collection, whilst he fascinating basement corridor offers a glimpse into life below stairs.
You can also stroll around the colourful Parterre Garden and the 18th-century Walled Garden, abundant with fruit, vegetables and herbaceous borders. Constructed by William Eames this features Sir John Soane’s glasshouse where young plants are produced for the vegetable plots which last year produced over 450kg of produce for the restaurant as well as cut flowers for the Hall.
Home Farm contrasts the traditional farmyard with the noisy modern piggery and cattle shed whilst in the landscaped park, among the rare-breed cattle, you can imagine the previous owners planning their visions of grand avenues and spectacular vistas or take a break in the Farm Café.
For a place to eat or just relax a while try the Old Rectory Restaurant. It’s a great place to drop in for a cup of tea and cake or relax on the comfy banquette seating over a leisurely two or three-course lunch. Whilst the Stable Kitchen serves a selection of light refreshments and ice creams. Take a seat in the courtyard or on the terrace overlooking the garden and watch the world go by. – image right justified, 900 reduced to c 300
