Visit to Hardwick Hall (NT)

The magnificent Elizabethan Hardwick Hall, near Chesterfield in Derbyshire, was begun by Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury (Bess of Hardwick) in the year 1591. Incredibly, 6 years later it was fully decorated and furnished ready for occupation. It is thought that much of the design is due to the architect Robert Smythson. Four great towers at each corner, crowned by parapets incorporating the initials ES, predominate and windows which increase in size as one’s eyes travels skywards were intended to proclaim Elizabeth Shrewsbury’s wealth and position in society. The house opens at 12 noon and restaurant, shop, park and gardens from 9.00 am. On arrival, NT staff will meet and greet us. We will assemble in front of the house for a group photograph before having tea or coffee (free flow) in the restaurant. Guided tours are not available but guide books (cost £5.50) can be obtained at the shop. The licensed restaurant serves (free flow) a selection of hot and cold meals, homemade cakes, snacks and sandwiches. For those who wish to picnic, there are some seats located throughout the extensive park and gardens.
